Windows 11 Receives Mandatory Security Updates, Alongside Long-Awaited Features and Fixes
Microsoft has rolled out two critical cumulative updates for Windows 11, KB5101650 and KB5099414, which address a staggering 571 security vulnerabilities discovered over the past few months. These patches are mandatory, as they include the latest July Patch Tuesday fixes. If you’re running Windows 11 version 25H2 or 24H2, your system will automatically prompt you to install these updates.
These updates are more than just security patches – they also bring some much-needed improvements and new features to the table. For one, Microsoft is introducing Point-in-Time (PiT) restore for all users, but enterprise customers will have additional control over this feature. PiT restore allows users to revert their system to a previous state in case of issues or malware infections.
One of the most significant updates is the revamped Widgets experience. Gone are the days of distracting widgets opening on hover – now, they’ll only open with an explicit click. The default settings have also been tweaked to minimize interruptions and improve notification controls. Another welcome change is the improved accessibility features. Microsoft has added a screen tint option that helps reduce eye strain and improves readability. Users can choose from preset tint options or adjust the intensity themselves. The Magnifier tool has also been updated to allow for more precise control over zoom levels, making it easier for users with visual impairments.
File Explorer has received some much-needed attention as well. Hovering over files now displays quick actions like “Open file location” and “Ask Copilot.” This feature is supported for work and school accounts (Entra ID). The update also improves File Explorer’s speed and performance, particularly when mounting disk images.
Bluetooth connectivity has been improved, with a new feature that keeps the microphone mute state in sync between the audio mixer and Hands-Free Profile (HFP) for a more consistent experience with Bluetooth headphones. This update also addresses compatibility issues with specific Bluetooth devices, including AirPods and Beats Studio Pro headphones.
These updates are not just security patches – they’re a significant step forward in improving the overall Windows 11 experience.
