A significant player has emerged in the operational technology (OT) security landscape, with AI-native OT security startup Frenos announcing it has raised $1.52 million in seed funding. This latest investment brings the company’s total funds secured to date to a substantial $6.4 million.
The new capital injection was led by Momenta and Exposition Ventures, with additional support from Riptide Ventures. Frenos plans to use this fresh funding to expand its customer success team and accelerate the development of its AI-powered technology. In addition to the announced investment round, the startup has also launched SAIRA Co-Work, an AI reasoning agent designed to provide actionable insights during complex investigations.
Frenos’ unique approach lies in its autonomous OT security assessment platform, which leverages a digital twin of the customer’s network and SAIRA to run fully simulated penetration tests. This innovative method allows for continuous validation of the security posture of OT systems, reducing assessment time to mere minutes with no downtime impact, requiring no additional hardware or scanning, and posing no risk to production environments.
The significance of Frenos’ approach lies in its ability to identify not just vulnerabilities but also specific attack paths that an attacker could exploit. This is a critical distinction, as most OT security testing today focuses on identifying exposed assets rather than the actual risks they pose. According to Robert M. Lee, co-founder and CEO of Dragos and Frenos advisory board member, “Most OT security testing today tells you what’s vulnerable, not what’s defensible. The question that matters is what path takes an attacker from an exposed HMI to a process they can actually disrupt, and almost nobody is testing for that.”
Frenos’ platform addresses this gap by providing a comprehensive view of the attack surface, allowing organizations to proactively identify and mitigate potential threats before they materialize. By thinking in terms of risk rather than just vulnerabilities, Frenos is poised to make a significant impact on the OT security landscape.
For organizations operating in highly regulated industries or those with critical infrastructure, Frenos’ platform offers a compelling solution for enhancing OT security posture. As the threat landscape continues to evolve, innovative solutions like Frenos will play an increasingly important role in helping organizations stay ahead of emerging threats.
Practically speaking, this development underscores the importance of adopting proactive security measures that focus on risk rather than just vulnerabilities. Organizations should consider investing in platforms like Frenos that provide continuous monitoring and assessment capabilities to identify potential attack paths and prioritize mitigation efforts accordingly. By doing so, they can significantly reduce their exposure to cyber threats and ensure a more secure operational environment.
