In a significant shift, Microsoft is set to make Windows settings backup and restore an essential feature by default for organizations using its Enterprise systems. Starting with Windows 11 version 26H2, the long-awaited tool will be automatically enabled on eligible devices, saving IT administrators time and effort in managing user data.
The Windows settings backup and restore tool was first introduced at Microsoft’s Ignite conference in November 2024 as an optional feature for organizations to opt-in. It allows IT teams to back up and restore enterprise users’ Windows settings after a device is reset, replaced, upgraded, or reimaged. This is crucial because user preferences, applications, and settings can get lost during these processes, disrupting productivity and work flow.
Until now, the tool was only available in public preview since May 2025 and had to be explicitly enabled by IT administrators through policy settings. However, with this new development, Microsoft will automatically turn on the feature for devices running Windows 11 version 26H2 that meet specific criteria: they must be part of Microsoft Entra-joined or hybrid-joined enterprise systems, not subject to EU Digital Markets Act regulations, and reside outside sovereign or restricted cloud environments.
While the backup tool is now enabled by default, IT administrators still retain full control over it. They can explicitly disable the feature using mobile device management (MDM) solutions like Microsoft Intune or Group Policy. Furthermore, users will need explicit admin configuration to restore Windows devices, ensuring that sensitive data and system settings remain under administrative control.
This change is a significant step forward for organizations seeking to reduce downtime and minimize disruptions caused by device resets or replacements. As more companies adopt hybrid work models and rely on cloud-based services, the importance of reliable backup and restore solutions cannot be overstated.
To ensure a smooth transition, IT teams can start testing the experience early through Microsoft’s Insider Program Experimental channel starting July 2026. Once the default-on behavior takes effect at Windows 11 version 26H2 general availability later this year, devices running earlier versions will receive the same treatment with the following feature update.
