Cloud Rebuild and Point-in-Time Restore: Microsoft’s New Recovery Features Aim to Save Devices from Disaster

In a bid to make Windows 11 more resilient in the face of catastrophic failure, Microsoft has begun testing two new recovery features that can remotely restore a device to a healthy state. Cloud Rebuild, introduced at the Ignite developer conference last November, can perform a complete system reinstall from the cloud, while Point-in-Time Restore (PITR) allows administrators and users to roll back a Windows 11 system to an earlier snapshot within minutes.

Cloud Rebuild is designed for situations where a device has become inoperable or is experiencing persistent problems. Unlike traditional reset options, which require USB media or a custom image, Cloud Rebuild downloads the target Windows image and drivers from Windows Update, ensuring that the device comes back fully functional without relying on the health of the currently installed OS.

To test this feature, users must first install the latest Windows 11 Insider Experimental Preview Build (26300.8772) and then navigate to the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). From there, they can initiate a Cloud Rebuild recovery by clicking “Cloud rebuild” under Troubleshoot > Recovery. The process involves reviewing the target Windows build, edition, and language before confirming data-loss warnings.

PITR, which began rolling out in June with the release of the KB5095093 preview cumulative update for Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2, allows users to restore a system to an earlier snapshot within minutes. This feature is designed to help administrators quickly recover from failures caused by driver or configuration changes.

Both features are part of Microsoft’s Windows Resiliency Initiative, aimed at helping devices recover from catastrophic failure more efficiently. The initiative also includes updated versions of Quick Machine Recovery (QMR), a tool that helps admins resolve Windows boot failures remotely, and a feature that recommends running a memory scan after a Blue Screen of Death to improve system reliability.
