Europol’s Crackdown on ‘The Com’ Network Exposes Disturbing Extremist Content Online
A multi-week operation led by Europol has flagged a staggering 4,340 URLs for removal from online platforms, targeting a loosely organized network of nihilistic violent extremist groups known as “The Com”. This joint effort involved investigators from nine countries and was part of the European Commission’s ProtectEU counterterrorism agenda.
At its core, The Com is a decentralized network lacking unified ideology, with some factions promoting right-wing extremist and accelerationist beliefs. These groups recruit and groom victims through social media, messaging apps, and gaming platforms, coercing them into self-harm, violence, and producing child sexual abuse material often through extortion. The content disseminated by The Com includes violent videos and images, as well as manuals or guides on committing violent attacks, grooming, and other forms of exploitation.
This operation builds on Project Compass, a year-long effort launched in January 2025 to disrupt online extremist groups. Since its inception, the project has led to 30 arrests, identified 179 suspects tied to The Com, and found 62 victims. In addition to these efforts, Europol previously warned about the rise of online cult communities specifically targeting young people.
The Com’s subgroups have been linked to various high-profile ransomware attacks, including those against Las Vegas casinos in September 2023 and Marks & Spencer, Co-op, and Harrods in April 2025. Two alleged leaders of one subgroup, 764, were arrested in April 2025 for operating an international child exploitation ring.
This crackdown highlights the need for online platforms to take a proactive stance against extremist content. By flagging these URLs for removal, Europol aims to disrupt The Com’s online ecosystem and limit the spread of nihilistic violent extremism. However, this is just one aspect of addressing the issue – individual users also have a crucial role to play.
To protect yourself from falling victim to such groups, be cautious when engaging with strangers online, especially if they are trying to recruit you into private forums or chat rooms.
