Cisco patches Secure Email Gateway zero-day exploited in attacks

Cisco has issued a critical security patch for its Secure Email Gateway (SEG) product, warning customers that threat actors have been exploiting a zero-day vulnerability to execute arbitrary commands with root privileges on affected devices. The flaw, tracked as CVE-2026-76461, allows unauthenticated, remote attackers to bypass security controls and gain unrestricted access to the underlying operating system.

The vulnerability affects all Cisco SEG appliances, regardless of configuration or device type – virtual or physical. This means that any organization using the Secure Email Gateway product is potentially at risk if they haven’t patched their systems yet. According to Cisco’s advisory, the flaw can be exploited by sending a specially crafted email message containing malicious SQL statements through an affected device. Once the attack is successful, the attacker can execute arbitrary SQL commands, leading to command execution with root privileges on the underlying operating system.

The exploitation of this vulnerability has been reported in the wild, and Cisco has shared indicators of compromise (IoCs) to help network defenders identify potential attacks. Administrators are advised to review their SEG logs for suspicious activity, including uploads and downloads to or from external or malicious IP addresses. It’s also essential to cross-check network and firewall logs for signs of unauthorized access.

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has added the CVE-2026-76461 flaw to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) Catalog, ordering federal agencies to patch their systems within three days. This is not an isolated incident – Cisco has recently patched several critical vulnerabilities affecting SEG and Secure Email and Web Manager (SEWM) appliances. In January, the company addressed a maximum-severity Cisco AsyncOS flaw that was exploited in zero-day attacks against SEG and SEWM devices.

The exploitation of these vulnerabilities highlights the importance of regular patching and security updates. Organizations must ensure they prioritize timely patching and configuration management to prevent similar attacks in the future. As we’ve seen, even with robust security controls in place, threat actors can still exploit vulnerabilities if left unpatched.
