Brinks Home Discloses Data Breach as Hackers Leak Files

Physical security firm Brinks Home has disclosed a data breach after hackers leaked over 41 gigabytes of allegedly stolen information online. The ShinyHunters extortion group claims to have obtained this data from Brinks Home’s Salesforce instance, where more than 4.9 million records were compromised.

Brinks Home, headquartered in Dallas, Texas, provides home security systems backed by an alarm response center. While the company has stated that its alarm monitoring and system functionality remain unaffected, it is now working to determine what information was involved and who may be affected by the breach. Customers are being advised to remain vigilant against unsolicited emails, text messages, or phone calls requesting personal information or account credentials.

The breach appears to have occurred when hackers accessed a portion of Brinks Home’s IT systems, although the company has not shared details on the threat actor responsible for the incident. This disclosure comes at the same time that ShinyHunters added Brinks Home to its Tor-based leak site. The extortion group has now leaked online more than 41GB of files allegedly stolen during the incident.

Some of the stolen records, according to ShinyHunters, include personally identifiable information (PII). While SecurityWeek has not independently confirmed the hackers’ claims, this breach serves as a stark reminder of the importance of robust cybersecurity measures for companies handling sensitive customer data. Brinks Home’s decision not to pay a ransom may have led to the leaked files being released online.

In light of this incident, it is essential for customers to take proactive steps to protect their personal information. This includes being cautious when receiving unsolicited communications and verifying the authenticity of any requests for sensitive data. Additionally, companies handling large amounts of customer data should prioritize robust cybersecurity measures, including regular security audits and employee training on safe data handling practices.

For Brinks Home’s customers, this breach serves as a wake-up call to review their account information and be vigilant against potential phishing attempts or other malicious activities. While the company has stated that it will notify potentially affected individuals if their personal information was compromised, proactive measures can help minimize the risk of further damage. By staying informed and taking necessary precautions, customers can mitigate the risks associated with this breach.
