Cybersecurity startup AegisAI has secured a significant funding boost of $36 million in its Series A round, bringing its total funding to $49 million. The company plans to use this influx of capital to expand its lineup of AI-powered email security agents and grow its enterprise go-to-market efforts.
Founded in 2025 by cybersecurity veterans Cy Khormaee and Ryan Luo, AegisAI emerged from stealth mode last September with a unique approach to email security. Rather than relying on traditional methods like static rules or known-bad signatures, the company’s platform uses AI agents that review incoming emails for signs of phishing, business email compromise, and other threats. These agents don’t just flag suspicious activity; they evaluate the intent and identity behind a message, providing more precise threat detection.
A key component of AegisAI’s platform is its Vanguard agent, which was introduced in March. This AI-powered tool investigates suspicious links and attachments by simulating how a human recipient would interact with them, compiling a detailed threat report within minutes. The company claims that this approach can help organizations stay ahead of sophisticated phishing attacks, including those that use language models to research targets and craft personalized lures.
According to Khormaee, CEO of AegisAI, the most significant cybersecurity risk today isn’t AI-powered hacking but rather human manipulation through AI-generated social engineering. He argues that traditional security measures like template-based phishing tests and awareness training are no longer effective against sophisticated threats. “You cannot patch human trust,” he says. “When the attack is AI-driven, the defense has to be AI.”
The funding round was led by Battery Ventures, with participation from Accel and Foundation Capital. With this significant investment, AegisAI aims to further develop its AI-powered security solutions and expand its reach into the enterprise market.
As email-based threats continue to evolve, organizations are looking for more effective ways to detect and prevent attacks. AegisAI’s innovative approach using AI agents could provide a much-needed boost in email security. However, it’s essential to note that no single solution can guarantee complete protection against sophisticated threats. Organizations should consider implementing a layered defense strategy that includes multiple security controls and ongoing monitoring.
Ultimately, the success of AegisAI’s platform will depend on its ability to deliver effective threat detection and prevention capabilities while also addressing the complexities of AI-powered attacks. With this significant funding boost, the company is well-positioned to continue developing its innovative solutions and stay ahead of emerging threats in the cybersecurity landscape.
