Vietnamese man charged in $16 million ‘pig butchering’ crypto scam

A Vietnamese National’s Arrest Highlights the Rise of “Pig Butchering” Crypto Scams

In a significant development that underscores the growing threat of cryptocurrency investment scams, a 37-year-old Vietnamese national has been charged with money laundering for his role in a massive “pig butchering” scheme. The scam, which defrauded a single victim out of $16 million worth of cryptocurrency, is just one piece of a much larger puzzle that has seen over $125 million in cryptocurrency lost to such schemes.

Trung Nguyen Van was arrested on September 24 at Los Angeles International Airport as he attempted to board a flight to Taiwan. According to court documents, Van’s cryptocurrency wallet received over $53 million between February 2018 and December 2024, including at least $24 million linked to known “pig butchering” schemes.

For those who may not be familiar with the term, “pig butchering” scams refer to a type of cryptocurrency investment scam where fraudsters build trust with their targets through social media or dating sites before luring them into fake investment schemes. Once invested, the scammers steal the funds by moving them into crypto accounts under their control.

The scale of these scams is staggering. The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) reported that Americans lost almost $21 billion to cyber-enabled crimes last year, with investment scams accounting for 49% of all scam-related incidents and resulting in $8.6 billion in losses. This trend highlights the need for increased awareness and vigilance among cryptocurrency investors.

The U.S. government is taking steps to combat these scams. In February, a Chinese national was sentenced to 20 years in prison in absentia for his role in an international pig butchering scheme that defrauded victims of more than $73 million. Meanwhile, the Scam Center Strike Force team has been established to disrupt Chinese cryptocurrency scam networks.

As the number of these scams continues to rise, it’s essential for investors to be cautious and do their due diligence when considering any investment opportunity. This includes researching the company or individual behind the scheme, checking online reviews and ratings, and being wary of unsolicited offers or promises of unusually high returns.

With the help of law enforcement agencies and increased awareness among investors, it’s possible to prevent these scams from succeeding in the future. But for now, it’s essential that cryptocurrency investors remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities immediately.
