Windows PC Users Left Without Sound After Microsoft’s Latest Updates
A glitch in Microsoft’s latest batch of security patches has left some Windows 11 users without sound on their computers. Specifically, USB audio devices may fail to work after installing the September updates (KB5124008 and KB5124012). This issue affects only devices running Windows 11 version 24H2 or later and is limited to USB Audio Class 1.0 devices.
The problem manifests as a “This device cannot start” error in Device Manager, no audio output, and unresponsive volume controls and sound settings. Some users have reported that their affected USB audio speakers fail only when using advanced audio features like 3D audio or 8-channel modes. While Microsoft has not provided an official solution yet, some users have managed to restore audio on their PCs by switching to a simpler 2-channel mode.
This is not the first time Microsoft’s updates have caused issues with Windows audio. In January 2025, an optional preview cumulative update (KB5050094) triggered similar problems, causing Code 10 errors and audio playback issues on Windows 11 version 24H2 systems with USB audio device drivers. More recently, in September, Microsoft lifted a safeguard hold that prevented upgrades to Windows 11 version 24H2 on systems with Dirac audio improvement software due to compatibility issues.
Microsoft has been actively working to address these types of issues, but the latest problem shows that there’s still work to be done. In their latest updates, they did manage to fix known bugs that were causing problems like wiping Windows desktop settings or preventing Teams and Outlook from launching on ARM-based devices. However, the audio glitch has left many users frustrated and searching for a solution.
The affected users are advised to keep an eye out for any official workarounds or patches from Microsoft in the coming days. In the meantime, switching to 2-channel mode may provide temporary relief.
