Peter Stokes, a 19-year-old dual citizen of the United States and Estonia, has been extradited to the United States and is facing multiple cybercrime charges. The alleged member of the notorious Scattered Spider extortion crew had been leading a lavish lifestyle, boasting about his globe-trotting adventures on social media while extorting millions from businesses worldwide.
Scattered Spider, which formed in 2022, has infiltrated over 100 companies globally, netting more than $100 million in ransom payments. The group’s targets have included U.S.-based companies, with the FBI estimating that its attacks have inflicted “millions of dollars in losses” and disrupted essential operations. Assistant Director Brett Leatherman emphasized the importance of international cooperation in disrupting cybercrime rings: “Through strong domestic and international partnerships, the FBI will continue to identify, disrupt, and hold cybercriminals accountable, no matter where they are located.”
Stokes’ alleged involvement with Scattered Spider dates back to its inception in 2022. Cybercrime researchers have been tracking his online activity since then, and Microsoft’s analysis led to a criminal referral in October 2024 that implicated Stokes as a member of the group. However, authorities typically don’t arrest known cybercriminals until they reach adulthood, which Stokes did not do until this year.
Stokes’ opulent lifestyle was well-documented on social media, with images of luxury hotels, watches, and substantial cash postings that showcased his extravagant travels to destinations like Paris, Italy, Spain, and Dubai. His family’s wealth also seemed to be a factor in his lifestyle, as his father was a previous executive in two major European companies.
The FBI has charged Stokes with conspiracy, cyber intrusion, and fraud offenses related to multiple data theft and extortion attempts. The most recent attacks included an incident on a luxury jewelry retailer in May 2025 and a U.S.-based insurance company in June 2025. Stokes was arrested in Finland while attempting to board a flight to Japan, possessing hard drives that allegedly contained incriminating evidence.
