Developed by Max Brin, OpenLeash is designed to provide an authorization layer that keeps autonomous AI agents accountable, secure, and aligned with user intent when they perform real-world actions. Unlike traditional antivirus software, which focuses on detecting and eliminating malware, OpenLeash intercepts agent intentions and asks the user for permission before allowing certain actions to proceed.
The problem with AI agents is that they tend to inherit the permissions of their users, but lack human situational awareness. This means they can have wide access and generous permissions across a network, making them vulnerable to mistakes or malicious intent. A single bad prompt or compromised model can cause significant damage, as Brin illustrates with an example: “When it intends to delete my database, Leash intercepts this message, evaluates it, and tries to understand if the action is risky or not.”
OpenLeash works by monitoring agent actions and intervening when necessary. Depending on the configuration applied by the user, OpenLeash can ask for permission before allowing an action to proceed – effectively acting as a guardian angel that prevents reckless agentic behavior. The product is highly configurable, allowing users to specify acceptable API endpoints, destinations, or payment limits.
Brin sees OpenLeash as particularly relevant to the growing class of “vibe coders” who are using AI tools like Claude Code and Cursor to develop applications without prior technical knowledge. These individuals often lack a deep understanding of cybersecurity, making it essential to have tools that can mitigate potential risks.
While still in development, OpenLeash is already in active use by hundreds of personal users and several organizations – including four major companies. Brin plans to complete a series of planned additions and improvements over the next few months, which will enhance the product’s capabilities even further.
