A critical remote code execution (RCE) vulnerability in the Windows Internet Key Exchange (IKE) Service Extensions component is being actively exploited by hackers, according to the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA). This flaw, tracked as CVE-2026-33824, affects all supported versions of Windows 10, Windows 11, and Windows Server. An attacker can exploit this vulnerability without requiring administrative privileges, simply by sending maliciously crafted packets to an unpatched Windows system through UDP ports 500 or 4500.

The Windows IKE Extension is a set of additional capabilities Microsoft added to the IKE Protocol, which allows for authentication via cryptographically generated addresses (CGAs), denial-of-service protection, and easier interoperability with non-Internet Protocol Security (IPsec)-capable peers. However, this feature also introduces a new attack surface that hackers can exploit.

Microsoft first addressed this vulnerability during its April 2026 Patch Tuesday advisory, warning that an unauthenticated attacker could send specially crafted packets to a Windows machine with IKE version 2 enabled, enabling remote code execution. While Microsoft has not yet updated its advisory to reflect the exploitation of this flaw, CISA has added it to its catalog of actively exploited vulnerabilities and ordered US Federal Civilian Executive Branch (FCEB) agencies to secure their devices within three days.
