A member of the notorious online cybercrime collective “The Com” has been sentenced to two years in prison for blackmail and sextortion offenses against nearly 120 victims worldwide. Justin Swaddle, known by several aliases on social media platforms, was arrested in October 2023 and pleaded guilty to multiple child sexual abuse offenses at Leeds Crown Court.
Swaddle’s crimes involved targeting young and vulnerable individuals, often between the ages of 13 and 17, who were coerced into self-harm and producing explicit content. He would threaten to share their intimate images or report them to their schools or parents unless they complied with his demands. The investigation, led by the UK National Crime Agency (NCA), uncovered a vast array of disturbing material on Swaddle’s devices, including indecent images of children and self-harm injuries inflicted upon victims.
The Com collective has been linked to various high-profile cybercrimes, including ransomware attacks against Las Vegas casinos and major UK retailers. The group is organized into multiple subgroups, with (S)extortion Com being the most notorious for coercing minors into sex crimes. Two alleged leaders of 764, a subgroup within The Com, were arrested in April 2025 and now face life in prison for operating an international child exploitation ring.
The recent sentencing of Swaddle marks another significant blow to The Com’s operations. In February, Europol led a year-long operation dubbed “Project Compass,” which resulted in 30 arrests and linked 179 suspects to the collective. During a subsequent multi-week operation targeting online content tied to The Com, Europol flagged over 4,300 URLs for removal.
