Organized crime groups are leveraging AI-powered voice cloning, deepfake real-time video overlays, large language model-driven persona management, and automated translation to convincingly create synthetic identities that can fool even the most sophisticated defenses.
This has significant implications for financial institutions, online retailers, cryptocurrency exchanges, and individuals who rely on identity verification to protect themselves from scams. According to Eric Huber, senior manager for adversary intelligence and disruption at TD Bank, major centers of organized crime in Southeast Asia and West Africa are using AI tools that can build completely believable synthetic identities.
These AI tools are designed to evade “know your customer” (KYC) rules and other identity-verification methods. By creating convincing fake IDs and deepfaked “liveness” videos, these tools allow scammers to bypass traditional verification methods and successfully scam their targets. Huber’s research into fraud cartels shows that this is not just a theoretical threat – it’s being used in real-world scams.
Recent numbers from Interpol paint a disturbing picture. Since 2024, the number of fraud-related campaigns has increased by 54%, fueled by AI. Over the same period, Interpol-supported member countries lost assets valued at $1.1 billion in over 1,500 transnational fraud cases. Even more alarming is that AI-enhanced fraud is 4.5 times more profitable than traditional methods.
A real-world example of this threat landscape can be seen in the updates to ProKYC, a turnkey KYC-bypass kit used by Nigerian scam rings. This tool defeats document-plus-selfie customer onboarding with convincing forged IDs and deepfaked “liveness” videos. In a recent demo at Black Hat USA 2026, Huber showed how ProKYC can create convincing fake identities that can fool even the most advanced AI-enabled behavioral defenses.
The new version of ProKYC offers even more sophisticated features, including automatic geo-tailored EXIF metadata insertion on fake images to evade origin checks. It also allows scammers to emulate specific target requirements for liveness-check videos. These tools are being sold via Telegram channels and have already been used in real-world scams.
