Maksim Silnikau, the mastermind behind the notorious Ransom Cartel ransomware operation, has been dealt a severe blow. The Belarusian national has been sentenced to 16 years in prison by a US court for his role in orchestrating devastating attacks against at least 18 companies worldwide.
Silnikau’s crimes spanned multiple continents and involved the recruitment of fellow cybercriminals through underground forums. He supplied them with stolen credentials, encryption tools, and software to compromise corporate computers. The operation’s affiliate website allowed members to manage attacks, negotiate ransom demands, and distribute revenue shares after a payment was made.
Between 2021 and 2023, Ransom Cartel affiliates launched a series of coordinated attacks against organizations in the US and abroad, including medical technology startups and law firms. In one notable case, the gang disrupted the operations of a medical startup for two months, while another law firm paid $125,000 to restore access to its systems.
The combined losses attributed to these attacks exceeded $2.2 million, with some victims still reeling from the effects of the disruptions. The total loss suffered by Ransom Cartel’s victims is estimated to be significantly higher, as many had not reported their attacks due to concerns about reputational damage.
Silnikau was initially arrested in Spain in July 2023 but managed to escape while awaiting extradition to the US. He was eventually recaptured while attempting to return to Belarus and later consented to extradition.
