Obsidian Security Raises $85 Million at $1.1 Billion Valuation

Obsidian Security, a leading provider of AI security solutions, has just closed an impressive $85 million funding round, valuing the company at a staggering $1.1 billion. This significant investment will enable Obsidian to accelerate its expansion into agentic AI security, a rapidly growing area of concern for enterprises.

The platform offered by Obsidian governs AI agents and SaaS applications, monitoring what these agents are permitted to access and execute within third-party systems such as data warehouses, developer tools, CRMs, and collaboration apps. This is crucial because AI agents often operate with elevated privileges, making them a prime target for attackers seeking to exploit vulnerabilities in these systems.

The platform’s runtime governance layer identifies and stops privilege escalation, over-broad data access, and policy violations as agents operate. It also maintains an inventory of MCP servers connected across an organization, tied to the specific agents invoking them, allowing teams to spot unsanctioned connections and gauge their potential impact. With this newest expansion, Obsidian adds native governance controls for Anthropic’s Claude Code and Cowork, giving security teams the ability to restrict agent permissions around production data, manage access to sensitive files, and block unauthorized tool usage.

Obsidian’s CEO, Hasan Imam, emphasized that AI agents tend to gravitate toward third-party applications where the data lives and work happens – also where the risk resides. He stated that only 13% of security teams can inspect and enforce policy on this traffic in real-time, highlighting a significant gap in current security practices.

Obsidian’s platform aims to bridge this gap by governing what agents do inside third-party apps, enabling enterprises to get the full return on every agent they deploy. This is particularly relevant as more organizations adopt AI-powered tools to drive innovation and efficiency, but struggle to ensure these tools are secure and compliant with organizational policies.

The $85 million funding round, led by Crescent Cove Advisors with participation from Greylock Partners and Menlo Ventures, brings Obsidian’s total raised capital to over $200 million. This significant investment underscores the growing demand for AI security solutions that can effectively govern and monitor agentic behavior within enterprise systems.

As more organizations move towards adopting AI-powered tools, it’s essential for CISOs and security teams to consider the risks associated with these agents operating in third-party applications. Obsidian’s platform provides a critical layer of protection against these risks by enforcing policies and preventing privilege escalation in real-time.

For enterprises considering implementing agentic AI security solutions, this investment highlights the importance of choosing a platform that effectively governs agent behavior within third-party systems. As Obsidian continues to expand its capabilities, organizations would do well to stay informed about the latest developments in this rapidly evolving space.
