Europol Cracks Down on Online Extremist Network, Flagging 4,340 URLs for Removal
In a major operation targeting online content linked to extremist groups, Europol has identified and flagged over 4,300 websites for removal. The multi-week effort, code-named “Referral Action Days,” involved investigators from nine countries working together to disrupt the online ecosystem of “The Com,” a loosely organized network of nihilistic violent extremist groups.
At the heart of this operation is the concern that The Com’s online presence poses a significant threat to young people. Europol describes the group as decentralized, with no unified ideology, but some factions promoting violent right-wing extremist and accelerationist beliefs. Members of The Com recruit and groom victims through social media, messaging apps, and gaming platforms, coercing them into self-harm, violence, and producing child sexual abuse material.
The Com’s online content is often laced with coded language and emojis that adults may struggle to decipher, conveying sinister messages that encourage self-harm and the exploitation of minors. The group produces manuals or guides on topics such as grooming, murder, improvised explosives, and ideological viewpoints, which are designed to instruct members on methods for committing violent attacks.
The joint operation between Europol’s EU Internet Referral Unit (EU IRU) and Spain’s Intelligence Centre against Terrorism and Organised Crime (CITCO) is part of the European Commission’s ProtectEU counterterrorism agenda. It builds on Project Compass, a yearlong operation launched in January 2025, which has resulted in 30 arrests and identified 179 suspects tied to The Com, along with 62 victims.
The Com has been linked to high-profile ransomware attacks against Las Vegas casinos and major UK retailers such as Marks & Spencer, Co-op, and Harrods. Europol’s efforts aim not only to disrupt the group’s online presence but also to generate new investigative leads and protect vulnerable individuals from exploitation.
This operation highlights the importance of international cooperation in combating cybercrime and extremist ideologies. As The Com continues to evolve and adapt its tactics, law enforcement agencies must remain vigilant and proactive in identifying and disrupting their online activities.
