This year’s event calendar has been packed with high-profile gatherings that drew global audiences, intense scrutiny, and enormous security demands. From the World Cup to the United States’ 250th celebration, major events have become prime targets for a range of threats, from physical attacks on attendees to cyber breaches targeting sensitive information.

The truth is that many event-related security risks don’t start at the venue itself or on the day of the event, but rather weeks, months, or even years in advance. A compromised hotel system can reveal where athletes, executives, or delegations are staying, while a breach involving government or ministry offices can expose schedules and movements. Threats aimed at fan events, themed gatherings, or transit hubs can target the outer ring of security, where crowds are harder to control and attackers may see more opportunity.

Olga Polishchuk, a seasoned cybersecurity expert with ZeroFox, has spent much of her career analyzing how risks take shape around major events. She notes that event security programs have become more sophisticated over time, incorporating cameras, bag checks, and perimeter controls as essential components. However, these measures work best when part of a broader strategy that accounts for risks forming across the wider event ecosystem, digitally and physically.

In assessing event-related security threats, Polishchuk has identified a consistent pattern: premeditated threats often leave digital signals before creating visible security concerns. These signals can form around any major gathering, from championship matches to festivals or political events, because hostile activity tends to organize around the brand, audience, attendees, and digital exposure created by all of it.

The disrupted Taylor Swift concert plot in Vienna in 2024 is a striking example of why this matters. Authorities were able to act before the concerts took place after intelligence surfaced from online sources like Telegram. This case shows how online activity can surface threats with serious physical implications, underscoring the importance of digital intelligence in event security planning.

Preparing to secure an event requires looking at both the physical environment and the digital activity surrounding it. Risks tied to public safety, travel, ticketing, impersonation, data exposure, and cybercrime may appear separate on paper but often connect in ways that shape real-world security decisions.

The most effective event security strategies begin long before the event itself. Pre-event assessments should consider the full ecosystem surrounding the gathering, including the venue, vendors, high-profile attendees, online communities, travel infrastructure, and nearby gathering points. A practical program should prioritize three key areas: protecting high-profile individuals, monitoring activity outside the perimeter of the venue, and leveraging early digital threat intelligence.

By prioritizing these areas, event organizers can create a robust security framework that anticipates potential threats and minimizes risk. This requires collaboration before there is a crisis, with physical security, cyber, executive protection, communications, legal, vendors, venue operators, and public-sector partners working from the same risk picture.
